Superman 2025

Superman 2025

I had a selection of ‘S’ over the years. The lines and the role the big Two Yellow Fish had in my upbringing being a Byrne Baby. wearing glasses. While ethnicity does not define it informs us and lines like

‘You may look like one of them, but you are not Kalel’

My first Edinburgh show I previewed for about two years before I got there. 2007.

‘From Krypton to Clapham’

A love letter to identity and finding one’s way.

It was messy, hurried and panicked with a lot of flaws but set me up for a decade. And I feel this film does the same.

Setting the DCU In media res is a smart move but sadly there is a lot that’s just taken for granted that works in an issue of a comic but is quite jarring in the graphic novel format that cinema is.

Lois and Clark have fantastic interplay. I would have loved more of the planet and their dynamics but sadly we get a day-glow puff piece about pocket universes and ethereal rifts which seem to be nom de guerre in sue[r hero films. Always some void or hole while a feisty bash happens on ground level that’s less conceptual.

It really is a golden age loveletter. But without the gravity to give relatable stakes it’s hard to find ground.

However, the humor and heart is beating and bleeding right through it. Maybe it’s me. The years have been harsh and while I have arguably been more actively heroic as we all were during the pandemic in our own ways. I find it hard to find idealism. Action is more demanding than words and this does seem a certain cgi verbage.

But then not meeting our ideals, screwing up, making mistakes, I love, I get scared. And maybe in a film recognising that.

That can be our greatest strength
