Star Wars echoes of darkness
Fan films are a tricky beast. The high bar being Star trek of gods and men, with original case. A feature length run time and no YouTube to ensure it would become exposed. But for every gods and men or batman vs predator there’s a hot take or Snyder verse or arrested development where the jokes are not knowing but five blokes in the Banta…and probably sold out the back of their ford escort where their dad used to keep the Betamax porn.
Echoes of Dark ness navigates away from that quite quickly and largely is able to hide as a decent story in the dark horse miles of cannon. A neat twist on the crystal skull of a jedi temple and to try to tie into Endor also showed the production values.
I van rave about the effect both practical and digital but choosing to endure while filming in the up on a fan film is facing daring.
Honestly finding a place to get days shoot right now without getting ducks or dogging in the shot is a feat that people don’t recognise.
But the sets don’t wobble, and the score has been adapted with curation and mixing. Its not just skipping to tragic shoot track 2 episode 3. It brings balance to the screen and the lighting. For each case and wipe out scene by scene its diegetic heaven.
The case as well delivers the broad shoulders of a franchise with aplomb. While Fintan and davit bring the dash rendering though the story and a scruffy comical nerf herder to the story I have to recognise it’s great to see Charlie bond break out of the princess Leia bikini I got her into a few years ago and have a script that allows her to deliver a straight dramatic role with wryness but intensity and a perspective missing from the star wars. Also, table is the light relief and side line commentary from our rebel sister’s commander taiko and lieutenant vela showing that the good guys are not always the greatest.
The film does suffer from its own Haribo in the; what could possibly go wrong, half laughs in the first half, but given the Kessel run pacing of the action they van be forgiven. But I do think it’s made a mistake by bringing in cannon character cameos, there was an opportunity to go for the lesser-known evils that would have aided the ambivalence and going for big bads means the empire threatens to overshadow the new characters. But given it’s a done in one story. I can imagine the desire to get everything in was hard to control.
So, at a hf an hour it’s a pleasant evening and way more worthwhile than caravan of courage. So, seek it out. always
