The Marvels

The Marvels.

It was Rich’s idea. It’s a Marvel film, I get Disney Plus for free. I get Netflix free. I feel my film going should be with my art house pretensions when it comes to the weekends. And after a few less worth than the trouble of Marvel lately…But He convinced me and booked the tickets. If a husband and dad can book tickets. That says commitment to me. And I am glad to say it was not let down. I like seeing films, but it’s good to see people too.

The Marvels hits that theme by taking the immovable object of Captain Marvel, a character so stoic in her other incarnations she feels like she was ripped from the Snyderverse, and placing her in an environment so volatile and emotive she can’t help but be the necessary chemistry of the unstoppable force of Ms Marvel’s enthusiasm. With a balancing angle with Monica Rambeu (codename to be determined)  the MacGuffin that entangles these women in such a messy, funny, scary and angry way is secondary to the unity of screen time and characterisation we see in them.

The weakest link though is in the big bad, Dar-Benn. A valuable character who bears a grudge for events we barely have seen or even commented on in the MCU. With a vague sense of what the Kree are at this point, I asked Rich if I had missed anything. He has watched all the shows for me. Loki.. and I was upset.

But what comes with Dar-Benn is a rather convoluted sense of powers and characters. She seems to be part Captain Planet and part Ronan the accuser. Shouting annihilator a lot and smashing with a hammer which doesn’t…I mean there’s no power stone in it ..urm..right?

But Monica, if anything has the eBay story as it shows Marvel is not afraid to look at the realities of the blip and the everyday tragedy of an osmosis event. Monica was blipped while her mother was dying. The dynamic that leaves her with could fill a whole episode on telly.

So we do have a somewhat sketchy plot. But rather than eye roll, the film does, as Kamalla says, go with the flow. It is enthusiastic and energetic and the best way to get humour out of Carol Danvers. While musical princess diaries and the importance of cats were a little bit lost on me. I remember it wasn’t for me as much as other audiences. And indeed probably served a purpose to upset the kind of men I like to see annoyed. So that is a win-win in two cases.

At less than two hours and a blinkered bit of editing around the Kree, the film does have its flaws and Marvel has not moved past the interminable sense of a middle act signifying nothing with this film. But the journey itself within the film and the dynamic of our promotion to the film arm leads make the film a total joy for its time.

To conclude. It’s a film about enemies and legacies and consequences. Dynamics and world views and overcoming one self to accept others is a strength greater than being some sort of tank in life.

And with that, my fiend Rich’s last comment. All the characters evolved from the telly. All had consequences and none turned from nowhere.

And for me. It was a fun ride that bodes well at least in terms of the risk Marvel..frankly needs to take in the films to come.
