House of the Dragon episode 6
To say this has been a muddling show for me so far would be an understatement
I often felt this was following the old star trek cliche where only the even numbered ones were worth watching.
But with the next generation put in front of us this time coupled with the cataclysm of last week’s events this show feels like there is some dragon blood being awoken in its veins
Our new leads, in a sense, are quite a distinct Maturin, especially in Hightower’s schemes. There is a greater sense of their value and worth to themselves and what they plan to build for their futures.
The crown and the redemption of Daemon bring many things. I have waited for it. A regal and infernal dynasty is waiting to wrap the kingdom in its dragon wings. His relationship with Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell) seems to have come to terms with majesty without needing to set fire.
Dragons, sea dragons, green dragons, dragon pits…and a pig. What more could a viewer need? Well, punch face dirt fights! And they’re right!
To see the incel knight come into the front as the queen king’s guard is somewhat jarring, but what else can one do within the homes. And in the past, people seem to have come to terms with their place in this station.
It’s paced and cut and, in many ways, attempts to show a broader world than the original show ever did. Bravos is a reality and political force. Not some colony but rather a place of trade and agency.
Indeed for a show about one house, it is finally beginning to stretch itself and remind us of the kind of storytelling that brought us to King’s Landing in the original series.
I’m keen to see how this now develops as there doesn’t seem to be any impediment to the blind ambition of our leads and where they choose to go. While Aegon does seem a strange development, given how his father is becoming increasingly frail, it still fits in the story.
Very become more ailing in mind and judgment, making this a more exciting show. The greys are allowed to show more in this story. Our leads are more flawed and driven. The move to personal and domestic adds more investment than any previous episodes.
The hand and the maneuverings become more intricate and fascinating. With some shocking moments and personal schemes sitting hand in the wing in the episode to keep drama at a height throughout
A rich episode almost overcompensates with two or three episodes worth of story; it’s hard to follow it all.
Honestly, I’m so reinvigorated by this episode I can’t wait for next week. I would still stick to my original point and skip a few episodes. Maybe even watch a bunch of them.
But this episode is gangbusters on every level. And it’s one to have tongues wagging all week!
